Metal cans and plastic bags don’t have to end up in trash

I’ve been working on this one project for sometime now. I would’ve done it weeks ago but I lost my interest in crocheting for a while and in addition my scissors are so dull it’s really hard to use them so, many times I just would lose my patience and stop working. I need to get a new pair but there is always something more important to get… .

So,

my first idea was to “dress” nice my metal cans. I wish I had more ideas to use them for because I throw away so many it makes me sad :/

The ones that I keep I like them to look nice, at least.

Few days ago using my old yarn scraps I made a can cover:

The next day I made different basket. I planned it to be a cover for my second can but when I got to a certain height I’ve noticed that it will work without the can inside :)

I named this yarn “Charmin ultra Strong“. Not very creative considering that it was made from Charmin Ultra Strong toilet paper plastic packaging (now you know what kind of toilet paper we use.lol). Here is a great tutorial of how to make plarn – yarn made from plastic bags.

Now I need to  finish my different plarn. This one will be called “The rest of it” as it’s made from all kinds of plastic small bags like the store-bought bread bag. When I started it we were still buying breads from the store. These days we don’t so to finish this plarn ball I’ve started using all kinds of bags.

old picture from my archives

I do not use the regular plastic bags that you get in the store to pack your groceries in (those I keep for a different plarn ball). I use every plastic package of already pre-packed in plastic produce that we buy at the store, like tortillas or diapers. My husband buys many things online for his office so every single thing that comes to us is packed in plastic bag. I keep those, as well. It’s fun and great for the environment and thanks to all of it I received a nick name: “miss recycling girl”.

For those who are interested this is the pattern I used for both of my projects:

Of course I modified it a little and if you’re interested in details just leave me a comment asking about it.

Crochet bathroom rug

I am really bored, you may think, but actually I am totally in love in crochet. I just want to sit and crochet and crochet and crochet :) First day I’ve decided to make that rug we went to a Michaels and I bought just 2 balls of yarn. One black and one blue. After two days I had to go back there and buy 2 more. Even then it wasn’t enough, so we ended up going to the store one more time for two more balls, and there is just a little bit black yarn left.

If you interested this is the pattern:

Ch 55, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, working 4 s c in end st of ch, working on opposite side of ch, 1 s c in each remaining st, working 2 s c in same st as beginning, join in 1st sc.

2nd Round. 2 s c in same space, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 52 sts, 2 s c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 52 sts, 2 s c in each of the next 2 sts, do not join or turn this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.

Next (x) Rounds. 1 s c in each s c increasing at both ends when necessary to keep work flat, join at end of last round.

Last round: sl around. fasten off.

Bacause I do not have the exact amount of stiches to increase in each row a few times I ended up unraveling rounds because it was too much (and the edges started to wave) or it was too little (and the edges started to curl).

Because I used two colors it’s very visible where I joined them. I kind of don’t like it. Next time I’ll know that in a pattern that you do not join rounds I should use one color if I don’t want the joints to be that visible.

Now I’m planning to make matching toilet seat cover, and top tray :)

In addition I keep forgetting about one great think that have happened to me a few days ago. My picture was featured at Evoking You. I am really happy about that.

Crochet basket

Every time I come across something what seems to be easy for me to make I do not think what kind of yarn I have to use in order to get the exact final effect as on the picture in front of me. Sometimes it doesn’t matter. Sometimes it does! It did matter this time. I saw a picture (that one below) and I really liked it. I looked at the pattern and I got all excited because it’s very easy! I thought: I’m gonna make it !

<—————

<————— This is how it looked

<—————

When you look at mine, it’s totally different!

I wasn’t thinking that to make it I need specific yarn. Thicker and more able to stand on its own. The one I had and used for this basket is really light and not so good to support itself. Somewhere in the middle of making this basket I new mine won’t look like the one I wanted to make. As a new to crocheting and still learning stuff I’d decided to keep making it. Just for the practice.

While still “practicing” :) I got an idea. Yep… it happens sometimes! :) Instead, I thought, I might try to make something different. I took one of our plant pot and put inside the unfinished project I’d been making. It fit perfectly. Hm… almost! :) I’ve decided I’ll finish it as a cover for that pot.  In order to do that I changed a little that pattern. Instead of making that extra fold on the top of this basket I did something different. In the last 4 row I decreased the amount of sc instead of increasing it. That way my basket would hold on to the edges of my pot and not going down. When you look at that pattern you’ll know what I’m talking about.

If you’re interested in pattern for the basket I WANTED to make you can download pdf file here:

I found it at Chickpea Sewing Studio.

My basket it’s an awesome idea to cover ugly looking pot, and make it to look pretty and interesting!

Blossom Crochet Bracelet

I’m pretty upset today for what happened yesterday to my post @World Moms Blog. I was actually criticised for being honest and for trying to explain MY CULTURE (my language). I know I might have been too honest and to rough with the term I used BUT we are all adults and we should be able to talk openly and freely about things that are different and not comfortable to talk about. Nevermind… .

Today I’ll be quick because I do not feel like I want to have anything to do with the Internet and people.

First of all I want to thank you SJ @Home Maker on a Dime. She featured me for my crochet necklace. My mood is already better :)

Yesterday I finished my new(est) crochet creation. I made it from the mixed patterns that I used for my three previous crochet things. I know that they are actually all the same color (and very similar patterns), but I’ve got those yarns and I do not want to buy more before I finish those that I have. At the same time, whatever I make it matches :)

The belt:

Pattern:

CH 33
Row 1: Linked TR in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th ch from hook, Linked TR in each remaining ch across, CH 1, turn
Row 2: SC in first 2 TR, Ch 3, sk 3 TR, (button hole made) SC in ea remaining TR, CH 4, turn
Row 3: Linked TR in each SC across to button hole, 3 Linked TR in button hole, Linked TR in last 2 SC, CH 1,

3 sc in the next stich and every stich around (Your work will start to “ruffle”) if it’s too much you can make 2 sc instead of 3. Joining with SL sc.

Fasten off

For the Flower and budd I used this pattern – crochet necklace (pdf file) from the necklace I made the other day.

For the button I use this pattern:

Start a magic ring leaving a long tail for sewing.

1. SC 10 into the magic ring, join with a SL ST to first SC to close circle.
2. Pull the tail left for sewing tight to close the magic ring and tie a knot at the base so that the ring does not expand.
3. CH 1,Work 2 sc in the next sc and every sc thereafter… SL ST to CH 1 to close. Tie off and weave in this end but leave the long tail unwoven so that you can attach the button wherever you need it.

(my base for this pattern was this one).

Sew everything to the places where you want it to be. Enjoy! :)

Have a great weekend, everybody! I hope that this time I won’t offend anybody because I do not celebrate 4th of July as Americans don’t celebrate 11th of November (or … wait… maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned that!) ;)

My new passion is being born – Crochet Necklace

My new passion is being born and you’re witnessing it.

As you probably noticed by now the last week or so I’ve been busy… crocheting. :)Years ago my mom and my sister together showed me how to make a single, double and half double stitch… . Since then, from what I remember I’ve made (from the beginning to the end) one thing. A blanket. Many time I would start doing something just to leave it in the middle. I don’t know why. Maybe because some of those projects were boring (like blankets, or winter scarf). Most of those patterns I saw where too complicated and I thought I don’t have the time to just sit and figure it out. I was young(er) and silly(ier) ;)

… and the last thing I would think about was to sit at home and crochet… lol.

When I found the pattern for those necklace I decided to give it a try. It didn’t look very complicated – and as you’ll see if you try it on your own – IT’S NOT. Today after I finished this project I’ve decided to make matching bracelet and earings. I’m almost done with the bracelet… but not sure what to do for earings. Buds or blossoms?! :)

For those who are interested you can download the pattern for the necklace here:

buds and blossoms crochet necklace (pdf file)

I didn’t use beads (to stuff the crochet buds) as it says in the directions but instead I rolled the yarn in a small ball and I used it for “stuffing”. Worked great, but… I broke two tapestry needles while trying to thread the cord (chain) through the stuffed buds… . They were plastic, so today I bought a metal one and it worked perfect.

Crochet bracelet – discovering my hidden talents ;)

My next project from the series: in front of the tv watchingPrison Break“. 5 last episodes. Good!

A few days ago I made a scarf, and yesterday I finished a matching bracelet. I already am in love it that piece :) It’s really cute.

I used beer bracelet pattern. I didn’t have any spare buttons so I crocheted two using a pattern from Beat Knitting

Now it’s time for matching earings … ;)

Back to crocheting: Very Easy Scarf

So, after having an art show with somebody who crochets and knits like crazy I got inspired :) (THANKS BASIA!!!!!!)

I am not a knitter ;) nor a crocheter ;) I would say… I know the basics. In addition I like doing something else while watching tv. Lately we’ve been watching “Prison Break” on Netflix and as I really enjoyed the first two seasons now I can’t JUST watch it without doing something else… . It’s gotten a bit too ridiculous. So, I’ve decided to use the rest of my yarn that’s been laying with no purpose at the house. The last time I used it was more than a year ago… I made a blanket for our daughter while she was still “in the oven”.

I was looking for something very easy since I actually know the basics. Right?! And I found it: Spring Frills Scarf (awesome blog with great and easy patterns!) that in my opinion could be used as a belt, as well but, I’ll understand if you don’t agree with me :)

Sunday Snapshot

At the beginning I was gooffing off using this scarf as a belt, but after a few adjusts it looked like it might work. In addition I’m not very comfortable in front of the camera. Showing off my legs… lol… that almost never happens – at all… lol… and here I am…

and getting a little bit brave(er) with the camera ;)

I’m planning to make a matching bracelet but not today. Today is a headache day! Can’t focuse at all… .
